COMPANY HISTORY

In 1958, two visionary architecture students, Georg Kieferle and Karl-Otto Rödl, established their architectural practice in Böblingen, Germany. United by a shared passion for innovation and excellence in design, the duo quickly gained recognition for their ability to merge creativity with technical precision. Their early years were defined by a series of competition-winning entries in the fields of cultural, governmental, and commercial architecture, solidifying their reputation as rising talents in the German architectural scene. Their practice was driven by the belief that architecture should not only serve functional needs but also enrich its surroundings with a sense of place and purpose. This ethos laid the foundation for what would later evolve into Kieferle & Partner, a multidisciplinary design firm committed to delivering master planning, architecture, and interior design solutions of the highest standard. From its inception, the firm demonstrated a commitment to timeless design, structural ingenuity, and a client-focused approach, values that would guide its expansion and evolution over the following decades.
Amidst the global recession and oil crisis of the 1970s, Georg Kieferle and Karl-Otto Rödl took a bold step, expanding their practice beyond Germany and venturing into Saudi Arabia. Their decision coincided with the oil price surge of 1977, which triggered an unprecedented construction boom across the Kingdom. Riyadh, in particular, became the epicenter of what was later referred to as “the world’s biggest construction site in human history”, marking a defining period in the region’s urban transformation. With a surging demand for large-scale infrastructure, the firm secured major commissions in master planning and architecture, primarily catering to government-led projects. They played a pivotal role in shaping new urban developments, often working under fast-track design-and-build models, where entire cities and government districts were conceptualized and constructed at record speeds. Among their most ambitious undertakings were massive urban planning projects with built-up areas exceeding 100,000 sqm, spanning across key regions - from Riyadh to Al Haql, an area that today forms part of the NEOM development. Their expertise in delivering large-scale, high-quality projects within ambitious timelines cemented Kieferle & Partner’s reputation as a leading force in the region’s architectural evolution.
By the early 1980s, Kieferle & Partner had firmly established itself as a key player in Saudi Arabia’s architectural landscape, securing one of its most significant commissions to date—the Jamjoom Centre in Jeddah. This mixed-use development was a pioneering project for its time, integrating retail, commercial, residential, and hospitality components into a cohesive urban hub. The design of the Jamjoom Centre was visionary, setting new standards for integrated urban living in the Kingdom. It featured: A high-end shopping mall, bringing a modern retail experience to the city. Commercial office spaces, catering to the growing demand for business infrastructure in Jeddah. Luxury residences, designed for contemporary urban living. A hospitality component, which was initially planned to house one of InterContinental Hotels & Resorts’ first properties in Saudi Arabia, reflecting the Kingdom’s rising status as a regional and international business hub. The project was not just about scale but also about innovation. Kieferle & Partner’s approach combined functionality with architectural elegance, ensuring that the development aligned with Jeddah’s rapid urban expansion while offering a dynamic and interconnected lifestyle experience. The Jamjoom Centre became an iconic development, reinforcing Kieferle & Partner’s expertise in large-scale, multi-functional projects. It also marked a turning point in their regional portfolio, setting the stage for even more ambitious undertakings in mixed-use, retail, and hospitality sectors across the Middle East.
By 2005, Kieferle & Partner had firmly established its presence in the Middle East, leading to the strategic decision to expand operations by opening a regional office in Dubai. This move marked a significant milestone in the firm’s history, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Gulf region’s rapidly growing architectural and urban development landscape. The Dubai branch, led by Cornelia Kieferle, became a pivotal hub for new projects and collaborations across the GCC. Almost immediately, the office made a bold statement by securing its first major contract: the Dubai Airport Freezone Authority (DAFZA) Headquarters. This prestigious project was awarded after winning a competitive design competition, further solidifying Kieferle & Partner’s reputation for excellence in architectural innovation, functionality, and sustainability. The DAFZA Headquarters was envisioned as a state-of-the-art commercial and governmental facility, setting new standards for corporate office design in Dubai. It reflected the Freezone Authority’s vision for modern, efficient, and future-forward office environments, catering to global businesses and multinational corporations operating within the Free Zone. With its expansion into Dubai, Kieferle & Partner was now at the heart of the region’s architectural evolution, leveraging its expertise to deliver landmark projects across the UAE and beyond. The establishment of the Dubai office paved the way for further regional growth, enabling the firm to take on a diverse range of projects spanning mixed-use, hospitality, commercial, and urban master planning—cementing its legacy as a trusted design leader in the GCC.
Q1 2024 marks the grand opening of ""Jewel of the Creek,"" the largest and most ambitious project undertaken by Kieferle & Partner to date.
